The Social Media Obsession - Survival in the Digital World

We are presently living in the digital world. Constantly updating statuses, posting tweets, and uploading pictures. Distracting our brains from what is really going on around us. I am as guilty of this as anybody. I have an obsession with my phone and laptop, I have trouble staying away from them for prolonged periods of time. By doing this we aren't letting ourselves fully live in the present. Whether it be putting out content for the world to see ourselves or scrolling through feeds to see what other people are doing. We feel the need to share everything we are doing at all times. Besides the sharing aspect there is communication with other people. The majority of our communications have become via text messages or other forms of internet communication. Nowadays the distractions are plenty, almost every social media platform has an option for private messaging. Gone are the days where we have to plan in advance to meet up at specific locations in order to catch up with real conversation. It is so much easier if we just text or talk on the phone right? As convenient as the phone and social media is, a problem arises when we become reliant on them. The majority of us have fallen in this trap.

My friend and I were observing our own friend group who can’t sit at a dinner without snapchatting or looking around and seeing someone on their phone texting during a conversation, we’ve become obsessed! If this is how we are living our lives, not in the present but through the digital world how is that healthy for our mental state and social life? I have read that our generation lacks empathy because we don’t have to look at each other and have real conversations in the present. This in turn detaches us from feelings and emotions towards each other.  How can we teach ourselves to live our lives in the digital world while living in the present? Although it is not possible for us to disengage from online activity completely, there are a few things we can do in order to keep ourselves at least semi-sane!

Balance - It is fun to snapchat or instagram pictures of our present activity, but maybe not everyday. We should try and keep a balance between sharing our lives and keeping aspects of it private. The more we get in the habit of this the less obligated we will feel to showcase every second.

Putting phones away during dinners - This is going to be a hard one. I want to be more present in my everyday life in general. I feel as though I am always on my phone even when I could be spending time with my family or being productive. We need to learn to keep up engaging conversations and allowing ourselves to look at our phones during them does not help. Maybe everyone should put away their devices and talk to each other! I love those signs that say "No wifi, talk to each other". Even though I'm the first one who would wonder what kind of place doesn't have wifi - guilty.

Social media cleanse - I've heard people go about doing social media cleanses differently. Some do it occasionally while others incorporate it into their everyday lives. It may be different depending on lifestyles and work but it is a good thing to take part in. For me I think taking out at least an hour out of my day to put away my devices is possible. While an hour sounds like nothing, knowing that I have not allowed myself internet access is the part I struggle with. I have become to accustomed to doing it without thinking that I need this break in my day to remind myself of what is really important. I would like to try a whole day without the internet in the summer after school is done and see how it benefits me.

It is all about reminding ourselves who and what is actually important and where we need to invest our time. I hope these ideas helped! Please comment and share your thoughts and ideas. Thank you as always for reading! :)

Coconut Oil - Best Beauty Product!

I initially decided to write about my top 5 beauty tips today, that clearly didn't happen. As I started jotting down my points for my first beauty tip I decided that I had too much to say and it demanded it's own blog post. This product is tried and true love of my life and I can't go a day without it. What is this magical product? Coconut Oil, the answer to everything!

There are a million different ways people use coconut oil both for beauty and cooking purposes. I am going to share the ways I use it in my everyday life. First of all if you don't own a bottle of unrefined extra virgin coconut oil, you need to right now. It is affordable, easily accessible, and you will find a use for it.

The first way I use it is as a face mask when I want to deeply moisturize my skin. I went through a phase of slathering it on my face every single night because I was obsessed with how my skin looked and felt in the morning. If you have extra dry skin you can get away with using it as a nightly moisturizer! It is more hydrating than any moisturizer you can buy at the store and its moisture is able to deeply penetrate your skin. If you feel as though it is too heavy for your face you can use it very lightly or add a few drops to your regular moisturizer to add that extra boost of hydration. It doubles as an eye cream when you add a layer under your eyes! I love doing this before bed as it gives the area the moisture it needs for a flawless concealer application the following morning.

It is an amazing body moisturizer as well. My legs suffer from extreme dryness in the winter and this product is the only thing that stops the nasty flakiness and itch.

Another way I use it is as a makeup remover. Stop spending money on all these makeup removing products! This oil will take it all off. From the foundation to the water proof mascara it decomposes the products when you rub it on the skin. All you need to do is wipe or wash it off and it leaves you with a clean face. Even after you go over it with cleanser to wash your skin you still get the light feeling of moisture from the oil. It does an amazing job and is really easy to use. You can't go back to any other form of makeup remover!

My hair is on the drier side as it is naturally more curly. I struggle with the annoying frizziness that comes along with it. Coconut oil was obviously the answer all along. I use it as a deep conditioner drowning my hair in it and washing it out after a few hours. No store bought deep conditioner can compare. I also mix a few drops in with my regular conditioner, my hair needs all the hydration it can get. When I need to tame frizz I take a few drops and run it through my dry ends.

Out of shaving cream? Don't buy a new one...ever! Coconut oil does an amazing job at taking it's place. You get the benefit of giving your legs the extra hydration from it too!

These are just some of the many uses for this miracle product. I highly recommend trying it for yourself!

#MondayMotivation with Maryam - Week 5

Good morning guys!

Here is another Monday Motivation post that I hope you are inspired by. This quote is an important one and a reminder for myself as well.

I have decided on sticking to a blogging schedule and will be posting twice a week. As I said in my last post, I may miss a few in the next few weeks due to upcoming assignments and exams. Besides that I am committed to posting Monday's which will be the Monday Motivation with Maryam and Thursday's which will be a miscellaneous one.
Quote of the week:

This quote by Warsan Shire went viral as it touched the hearts of many. Isn't it so true? I chose this as the Monday Motivation of the week as it is a reminder as well as motivation for self love. We are not show and tell items on display for the world to approve or even comment on. Way too much emphasis is placed on superficial beauty which is extremely relative - I have way too much to say about this topic so I will write a full post on it. We have many responsibilities in life but whether or not other people find us attractive should not be one of them. Why place your self worth in the hands of others in that way? I am obsessed with makeup and fashion but it's because it is what I love and is for no one else. If you aren't into that then that's completely okay and you should do it for no one! We are so much more than what we look like. We are way too valuable to let anyone else tell us otherwise. Anyone that makes you feel down about your appearance needs to blocked and deleted from your life. Ignorant people.

#MondayMotivation with Maryam - Week 4

Today's Monday Motivation is going to be short and sweet. I have many words of inspiration I am excited to share with you guys. This is going to be a regular part of my blog that I am committed to keeping up with. That being said I know I may have to skip a couple in the next few months because of upcoming exams but I will try my best not to do so. It has been a month of doing the motivation posts and I felt that this one was important to add in right now.

It's funny how these words can be of comfort when you are in a stressful situation. This is because it makes light of the fact that despite the stressful situations, we all are so much more blessed in life. It is a reminder of gratitude. Of recognizing that even though we go through hard times we will overcome it, there is so much to be thankful for. It is a reminder to be positive and an encouragement for an attitude change. This can be hard but as soon as you start listing the things you have been blessed with and give gratitude for you will automatically feel comforted. We become for positive in difficult times when we learn to focus on the good energy. Take a few minutes of each day to count your blessings. Whether it be writing them down or just thinking of them it will help you have a better day.

Thank you as always for reading! :) <3

5 Ways to Empower Women

International Women’s Day on March 8th recognized the struggles and accomplishments of women all around the world over the past century. Though it was nice to see people speak out honouring women, we still have a long way to go for gender equality. Speaking out on social media is an essential part of any activism but there are still many things we can do to empower other women. The unity that was seen on international women’s day inspired me to come up with a few things we can do in our everyday lives to empower each other.

(PREACH!)

1. Teach our children - It starts at an early age. We need to educate the little girls in our lives as they will be the women of the future. They need to see strong female influences around them, we need to be their role models. It is necessary to give them encouragement and the belief that they could do anything and everything they want to.

I love this video I found of girls all over the world talking about what they need to feel empowered.

2. Speak out against injustice - Whether it be women in your life, celebrity issues, or something in the news use your voice to stand up for what you stand for. We can’t sit there and not speak up against other women being belittled or mistreated. The more people are silent about such issues the more they take place. We need to use our voices to help put spread awareness letting others know it is wrong and needs to stop.

3. Acceptance - It is very important for us to accept one another for who we are. It is sad to see women tearing each other down based on things such as body type or fashion sense. We need to support each other regardless of race, preferences, or how we choose to dress.

4. Kindness - Sometimes all we need to do is be nice to others. We never know what people are going through in their everyday lives. Whether it be nice words or actions a little gesture of kindness goes a long way. Women being nice to other women can often be all the support and encouragement one needs.

5. Celebrate each other - We should be the first to congratulate other women for the achievements they have made. We need to be genuinely happy for each other and be able to express that. Complimenting others does not take away from how amazing you are. The more positivity we put out in the world the more we will see in return.

#MondayMotivation with Maryam - Week 3

I need this on a t-shirt.

Happy Monday everyone! :)

Quote of the week:

Time is a valuable thing that we often take for granted. We go through our lives inevitably making mistakes on a regular basis. We are human and far from perfect - nothing wrong with that at all! The problem begins when we use our precious time dwelling over past incidents and shortcomings. I am guilty of this as someone who struggles to let go of the past and likes to sulk and complain - this is a reminder for me as well. We can't change anything so why do we let it affect our present and future? A new day is a new chance at doing whatever we need to do to be happy. Failing at something does not mean you are a failure, there will be more chances at success. Stop letting your past define you and start living in the present. Everyday is a blessing. <3

Current Favourite Makeup Products - March 2016

Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow Pomade -

I use the shade “Dark Brown” There are 11 shades available to choose from!

There has been an going brow obsession for a while now, our brows must be on point! This product is what gives me the best brows! This creamy pomade glides on smoothly and blends easily. A tiny amount is enough to fill in both brows making this product last a long time. It gives depth and definition to the brow while giving you the option to achieve the look you want. You can get a natural brow or keep adding more until you get a more bold look. I recommend using a small angled brush for precise application as well as a spooly to blend.

Maybelline Master Conceal -

I use the shade “Light” which is one of the 5 shades available.

I am a concealer junkie! It is something that I always feel the need to buy more of, and I’ve tried many. I am a huge fan of Maybelline concealers so when this came out I had to try it. The creamy concealer is in a squeeze tube form allowing you to take out only as much as you need, which is not very much considering the tiniest amount goes a long way. It is a full coverage formula that I use on special occasions or when I need extra coverage under the eye. I use a shade that is lighter than my skin tone in order to brighten and it does a good job doing so. The only downsides are the minimal colour selection and that if you don’t set it well it creases (as most concealers would). This product has been compared to the Makeup Forever HD Concealer and the Mac Pro Longwear. It doesn’t hurt that it is affordable and easy to find as well!

Anastasia Beverly Hills Contour Kit -

I have the contour kit in “Light".

This product has obviously been well loved. I bought this when it first came out and was so excited to try it. Since then many other brands have come out with a similar product. I don’t own any other contour kit so I have nothing to compare it to. This is the perfect product for beginners because the powders are soft and buildable and it has the necessary colours. My favourite shade for contour is Fawn due to its greyish undertone that mimics an actual shadow that is perfect for a natural contour. When I want to add depth and colour I add the other two colours. I love Banana for adding an extra layer of brightness to my under eye. I will be purchasing more contour kits so I can find the best one out there for me, this one works perfect for now! The pans are removable and you can buy backups of each individual colour.

Marcelle Loose Powder -

I have it in the shade translucent.

I was looking for a good setting powder and a few of my friends recommended this one, it was everything I was looking for! Whether you want to set your foundation and concealer or “bake” under you eyes it does the job beautifully leaving a flawless finish. It lasts all day and doesn’t oxidize at all. I highly recommend buying this over powders from high end brands as it does the exact same thing while being half the price! I don’t think the brand is available in many countries which is the one downside. In Canada I can find it in any Walmart or drugstore for $10-15. The price is amazing for the 2.4 oz of product you are getting, it will last you forever!

Beauty Blender -

This is an extremely raved about sponge that is a staple in every makeup lovers collection - and for good reason! It is my favourite way to apply foundation and concealer because it makes the process quick, easy, and flawless! I have recently started to use it with my setting powder and contour powders as well, it does an amazing job. If you haven’t tried the Beauty Blender you are missing out!  I would recommend the black one because it doesn’t stain as bad as the other colours.

Nars Madly -

It is described as a seashell pink colour.

This was the first blush I ever bought from Sephora. At the time many youtubers talked about how it was a must have and it is worth the hype for sure. In the pan it doesn’t look like much but when applied to the skin it’s like it transforms to the most gorgeous colour. The formula is buttery and pigmented as all Nars blushes are and the colour is a mix between a blush and bronzer. It has a slight sheen which gives the prettiest glow. The neutral colour will go with any makeup look. This is my all time favourite blush and I will always have it in my collection!

Loreal Voluminous Carbon Black Mascara -

If you are a fan of dramatic lashes this is a mascara you need to try. I love trying different mascaras but this is one that I always go back to and it never lets me down. It gives me length, volume, and intense colour. Kim Kardashian's makeup artist Mario uses this, so you know it must be one of the best!

Mac - Spirit

This colour is described as a "muted pinky beige brown" and is a "Satin" finish.

I've always gravitated towards coloured lips over nudes because I found it hard to find a nude lipstick that didn't make me look dead. This lipstick is in the colour family of the popular "Kylie Jenner lip colour" Velvet Teddy. This is a tiny bit deeper than Velvet Teddy but achieves the same look. I would recommend this colour to anyone with a South Asian skin tone looking for a neutral shade. I bought this a few months ago and it has become my everyday lip colour!
