This hashtag was started by Bell Canada as part of the Bell Let's Talk Day campaign in order to recognize and fight the stigma around mental health, the very common health issue suffered by many. Bell Canada donates 5 cents to mental health programs and research for every time the hashtag is used.
Education and conversation is the only way to make light of topics that are not paid much attention to such as this one. People suffering with mental health issues such as depression and anxiety are not discussed or given importance to in comparison to those with physical health problems. Anything that affects the lives of our fellow human beings should be dealt with in a manner that shows just as much compassion and care. Especially when mental health is as common as it is and continues to grow among all age groups. Approximately 1 in 5 Canadians will deal with a mental health issue at some point in their lives, and that is just in Canada. Studies and statistics prove that we all know someone whether it be a family member, friend or acquaintance that is suffering on a daily basis. This is why the conversation needs to take place. We need to speak up.
What can we do to help ourselves and others?
1) Communication - There needs to be open and honest discussions in a comfortable environment in order to find out how to help or how you need to be helped.
2) Education/Research - Find reliable sources that are available in order to find out as much as you can about the issue. The more you know the more you will be able to help fight the stigma. There are many myths about mental health that you will be able to recognize and fight with facts.
3) Be nice!
